Two controversial ideas — medical marijuana and expanded government health insurance — took major steps toward becoming law in North Carolina this past week. And a bill to protect Fayetteville State University's name passed a state House committee and may next move to a vote on the House floor. The FSU bill passed the state House Committee on Education - Universities on Thursday and advanced to the Rules Committee. This is where most bills are sent before they get a vote on the House floor. This bill was drafted in light of past efforts to rename Fayetteville State to 'UNC-Fayetteville' — alumni say such a name change would dilute the school's heritage as a historically Black university.
